OTTAWA — It detects extreme weather and has a snooze option, similar to any radio alarm clock, but Environment Minister Peter Kent isn’t sure why his government spent nearly $1 million to buy 14,000 “Weatheradios” for schools, girl guides and scouts across the country.

“There were [critical] remarks on this matter voiced by lawmakers and experts and they have provided their arguments, which were shared by the government, so the agency for protected areas will remain in the Ministry of Environment,” Gia Khuroshvili, the government’s parliamentary secretary, told lawmakers on February 25.
