OTTAWA—Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s environment minister is quitting politics to take a job in the private sector. Jim Prentice made the surprise announcement the House of Commons, where he said he’s accepted a job as a vice-chairman of the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce.

Bangladesh prepares to establish environment courts in districts

By Mizan Rahman Bangladesh is set to establish environment courts in 64 districts after the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina placed the Environment Court Bill 2010 in the Parliament, seeking provisions for allowing citizens to file cases against polluters and for setting up at least one environment court in each district.

German Environment Minister Norbert Roettgen will announce his candidacy to become the Christian Democratic Union leader in the western state of North Rhine- Westphalia, Bild newspaper reported. Roettgen will run against Armin Laschet to succeed Juergen Ruettgers, who was ousted as prime minister of Germany’s most populous state this year following an election in May.
