Quick Facts about Bamboo Flooring’s Durability

November 25, 2013 by · Leave a Comment

Article Written by : ARCHIBLOCK

There are countless options out there when it comes to flooring. One of the most popular, though, is quickly becoming bamboo. It provides a unique, but beautiful look, and has a number of structural advantages. While there is plenty of information on bamboo floors out there, keep reading for some related to its durability.

Bamboo flooring durability is great. Of course many people understand this, given how strong and durable bamboo is. The East Asian plant is renowned the world over for being practically indestructible. But the truth is your bamboo floor will still need a quality finish to guarantee results. Fortunately, there are many options available to choose from (i.e. aluminum oxide) that are designed to work with bamboo to protect your floor.

Many people are also under the impression that bamboo is low maintenance. Again, this goes back to its legendary strength and durability. They seem to think this also means bamboo can take whatever comes. This isn’t the case, though, and it doesn’t even make sense. Maintenance means cleaning as much as anything and bamboo isn’t impervious from tracking in mud, the gathering of dust or people spilling.

While there are some specific methods your floor may need (speak to the manufacturer about your floor’s in particular), for the most part, bamboo is no harder to care for than other options.

How AC Cooling Works

November 24, 2013 by · Leave a Comment

Air conditioners are one of those modern amenities it’s hard to imagine living without. Whether it’s air conditioning in your home or portable cooling, life would be very difficult without them. Read on for a short primer on how they work.

Most air condition uses fan coil units to cool the air around you. Modern technology has made other versions as well, but let’s look at how fan coils work.

The coils in your unit are metal pips wrapped around to maximize their surface area. Whereas a straight pipe might only be a foot long, wrapping it around can make it multiple feet that fit in the same amount of space. This is important when it comes to air conditioning.

When it comes time for cold air, these pipes are chilled. This alone might cool some of the room, but not enough. So a fan is added which helps disperse the cold environment produced by the coils.

How the coils get cooled depends on the unit. Traditionally, it took nothing more than cold water. This water would be cooled by chemical means and then pumped through the coils. More modern units handle the cooling process inside the machine. Chemicals like Freon are used to create cold pipes. Then the fan kicks in to disperse the cold air and the leftover material is dumped into the atmosphere.

For those of us living in colder environments, winter is an especially tough time of year. The weather can become so unbearable it can be a challenge even getting out of bed in the morning. Our one pleasure, that nice warm shower, is short lived and rudely ended when the cold reclaims our bathrooms.

But this doesn’t need to be the case. Thanks to tile heating, we can step out of our warm shower and into a bathroom full of heated tiles. No more deep breaths before we turn off the nice hot water, no more bracing ourselves before we step into our cold bathrooms.

Heated tile is a relatively simple concept. By running coils under the tiles in your home, you can source the appropriate amount of heat to them. Not only will they keep your floor nice and toasty, but, as heat rises, you can also expect that the warmth will filter into the rest of the room as well. It’s a very efficient way to warm a room.

The technology for heated tiles has been in place for decades now, so you can rest assured it’s been perfected. Furthermore, you don’t need to worry about your exorbitant prices thanks to scarce materials or expertise.

Before winter sinks its cold teeth into your daily life, consider these nice warm tiles for your bathroom. While the cold will touch you eventually, these tiles will make it wait a bit longer.

An Alternative to Traditional Washers and Dryers

November 16, 2013 by · Leave a Comment

Washers and dryers have become such stables of our society that it’s difficult to imagine what life would be like without them. While many people sometimes elect to hang-dry their clothes, can you imagine life without washing machines?

While there’s probably turning back from washing machines and dryers, that doesn’t mean there aren’t alternatives. And these alternatives, as it turns out, can actually be much better.

Almost since their inception, washing machines have operated by taking on big loads all at once and then using lots of soap and water to clean them over a period of time (usually about an hour). However, what happens if you just need one outfit cleaned? We’ve all been in this situation and the answer is usually that we have to wait until we have enough dirty clothes to justify its cleaning or we don’t wear it.

Thanks to smaller, compact washing machines, you can simply washing that one outfit. It uses far less water and doesn’t take nearly as long.

Alright, now that’s nice and clean, it’s also wet. So now what? Well, if you keep to the alternative theme, you can simply use a countertop dryer. Many of these are no bigger than a blender, yet they get the job done—again, in a fraction of the time.

Just because we always used them, doesn’t mean we always need to. Try smaller washers and dryers today and see what everyone’s talking about.

November 15, 2013 by · Leave a Comment

It can be easy forgetting about our floors when it comes to planning our home’s décor. Obviously, we all know floors are necessary, but most people simply pick a material and then move onto something more interesting like the windows, color scheme or furniture. But the truth is your floor can have a lot of personality if you let it. Here are some ideas for dressing it up.

Cork is a fun material to use for the surface of your floor. Yes, I’m talking about the same material you use for a stopper in your wine bottle. When condensed into a floor material cork makes for a sot floor that will dull sound. It’s even flame resistant.

Ceramic tile is an old standby of home floors, but there’s still a lot you can do with it. The affordable flooring option may be one of the most versatile materials out there. No matter what your style, there’s a ceramic tile to match.

Flooring medallions are the easiest way of adding elegance to your home. They’re geometric designs (usually a circle or a square) with a pattern inside (often another geometric design, a starburst, etc.). Tile floor medallions are an easy way to get the beauty of floor medallions at a price you can afford.

Don’t forget to give your home’s floors the attention they deserve. Though they’re easy to take for granted, you’ll wonder how you ever did if you utilize some of the above techniques.

Why You Should Choose a Portable Air Conditioner

November 13, 2013 by · Leave a Comment

In certain cities and states, it’s absolutely crucial to have air conditioning. Particularly in dessert areas and cities with hot climates like Los Angeles, it’s basically a necessity. Unfortunately, having a centralized air conditioning system installing in a home or office building is often very costly. Luckily, that is no longer the only option available. Many home and business owners today opt for portable air conditioning instead.

Portable ac offers many benefits over traditional systems. Not only are these systems much more affordable than centralized air, they’re also more convenient, energy efficient, and flexible. There are other benefits as well. Installation is much easier and quicker with portable air systems than centralized air. Nearly anyone can install a portable system themselves. The only requirement is identifying the proper location and an exit for the exhaust hose.

One of the major disadvantages of using a traditional air system is that the cost of cooling a house or office can be very pricey. The monthly utility bill can quickly rack up with a traditional system. PACs can help you save a lot of money while still having the benefits of a cooler environment.

PACs are portable which means they’re versatile and extremely convenient. Not only can these systems be moved to a different room in your house or office within minutes, they can actually be used for outdoor cooling as well. These systems are lightweight which makes them incredibly easy to maneuver. Outdoor cooling is a great benefit offered by PACs. Perhaps you have an outside sporting event or wedding during the hot summer months and you need your guests to stay cool. If so, consider a PAC system for both your indoor and outdoor needs.

Many portable air conditions are multipurpose and multifunction. In other words, many of these systems can serve as an air conditioner in addition to working as a dehumidifier or heater. Dehumidifiers are a great option for allergy sufferers. These machines help to decrease the amount of humidity in the environment which can translate into the elimination of mold and dust mites.

One of the best things about portable air conditioners is that they can help cut down on energy wastage. Centralized air requires a lot of energy. PACs on the other hand don’t take up as much energy to cool the environment. This is one of the reasons that it costs much less to operate a PAC than a traditional system.
